Catalyst Conference at Western!

The University of Waterloo is hosting the 3rd annual Catalyst Grade 11 Women’s Conference.

From May 3rd to May 5th 2013, attendees will experience what it means to be an engineer and what it is like to be a student at Waterloo. By participating in a number of hands-on workshops, meet and greets with female students in engineering, competing in a design competition and experiencing life in residence they will build a better understanding of the profession of engineering and post-secondary education.

One of the 2011 students described their experience as follows:

“Catalyst gave me a great experience last year. I had the opportunity to get a sneak peak at dorm life and I learned a lot about engineering. Even though I planned on going into engineering Catalyst helped me to stop second guessing myself about my future.”

The registration fee for this event is $100 and includes meals, some snacks and residence accommodations. All students are responsible for their own travel to Waterloo. If this fee is a barrier bursaries are available. Interested students are asked to submit an application which can be found on the website below.
More information about this event can be found here.
Please pass this opportunity along to your students. A downloadable poster is available to hang in your school and I am happy to send you high quality printed copies. Just let me know via email how many you would like and the mailing address we should use.
Thank-you!

Q LEAD for seniors - great leadership program

Hello from QLEAD,

My name is Keith Dell and I am the Delegates Director for the Queen’s University Leadership, Excellence and Development Conference (QLEAD), a conference run by Queen’s Commerce students. QLEAD targets outstanding high-school students, encouraging delegates to strive for greatness and become leaders in their schools and communities while exposing them to the transition to university life.

This year, our conference will be held on November 8-11, 2012, and the QLEAD executive team has already begun our preparations. We feel that your students would be an excellent fit for the conference, and would like you to consider spreading the word for this conference to your students. QLEAD has grown into one of the top conferences of its kind in Ontario, attracting high school students from across Canada interested in all aspects of leadership. Every year, hundreds of the most ambitious high school students across Canada apply to attend the annual QLEAD Conference, allowing students to gain a more enhanced understanding of business, and to develop teamwork and leadership skills crucial to future success.

The Delegates Package and YouTube video provide more details about the amazing opportunities this conference will provide students. If we have not reached the right contact in regards to promoting this conference, we would be very appreciative if you could put us in touch with the appropriate contact at the high school of which you are affiliated.

Thank you in advance for your consideration, and I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Regards,

Keith Dell

Engineering Experience for Girls !!

Good Afternoon,

The Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering at the University of Toronto is committed to making science, technology, and engineering accessible through interactive and hands-on activities and events. As such, the Faculty’s Outreach Office offers a variety of enrichment programming throughout the year for high school students.

One of our more heavily attended programs is the Girls’ Science and Engineering Saturdays (GSES). Registration for GSES is now open, and we thought some of your female students may be interested in taking advantage of this amazing opportunity. We would appreciate it if you could share the information below in your school’s science, technology and math classes.

GSES features fun hands-on, discovery-based science and engineering activities for girls in grades 3 through 12. The program is offered at the St. George campus of the University of Toronto in the Fall and Winter each year. We offer a new, age- and grade-appropriate curriculum each term so students can attend year-round.

The Fall sessions for this program are Saturdays from October 20 to November 3, 2012 (2 pm to 5 pm each week) The meta-theme for this term is: Science, Engineering and Entrepreneurship

Our instructors are female undergraduate and graduate students pursuing degrees in science, engineering or technology-focused subjects. They lead and mentor the young girls in a friendly and enthusiastic manner.

We also offer Saturday Science and Engineering Academy, our co-ed programming for students in grades 5 to 12 during the Fall and Spring term. Registration for the Fall 2012 session is now open; for a list of courses available, please visit http://outreach.engineering.utoronto.ca/preuniversityprograms/SSEA.htm

If you would like a copy of our brochures to distribute, please let us know.

As always, if you have any questions, feel free to contact our office at 416-946-0816 or via email at enrichment@ecf.utoronto.ca.

Sincerely,

Your Engineering Outreach Team
