HDSB hosts Halton Pathways: A Future That Fits on Nov. 29

The Halton District School Board is pleased to announce it is hosting its second annual experiential learning event, Halton Pathways: A Future that Fits, for approximately 1,500 Grade 10 students, on Friday, November 29 at the Mattamy National Cycling Centre (Velodrome) in Milton.

The daylong event will feature an opportunity for students to explore high school Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) programs and to meet the teachers and employers related to each SHSM sector. The event will include more than 45 local businesses, providing a full day of hands-on interactive activities for students.

Colleges and universities will attend and provide displays related to STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics), Police Foundations, Trades and Technology, the Environment, Energy, and Arts and Culture. Activities will include a robotics display, healthcare medical simulation mannequin, construction and DIY projects, sound, lighting and equipment, a virtual reality trainer, fire trucks and fire extinguishers, cupcake decorating, welding simulations, therapy dogs, fingerprinting session, and more.

“This event will give our students the opportunity to explore many different businesses and learn about programs, like the Specialist High Skills Major and the Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program, that allows them to engage in specialized programming and real-work experience in high school,” says Veronica Kleinsmith, Specialist High Schools Major Resource Teacher for the Halton District School Board.  

The HDSB currently offers 60 Specialist High Skills Major programs and 15 Concentrated Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Programs with approximately 1,500 Grade 11 and 12 students enrolled in more than a dozen different sectors such as Business, Arts and Culture, Transportation, Construction, Justice, Community Safety and Emergency Services.

Catalyst Summer Programs

Applications will open for our Catalyst Summer Program and Grade 11 Girls Conference next week, on November 27th at 12:30PM The Catalyst Summer Program (Grade 10-12): is a 2-week program that offers a unique, interdisciplinary approach to the “traditional leadership program." Drawing from the University of Waterloo’s strengths in engineering, science, and innovation, high school students develop leadership skills within a community and problem-based context - with real opportunities to put new skills to practice! Leader In Training Program: The Engineering Science Quest Leader In Training (LIT) Program is a program designed to engage high school students applicants who have finished grade 9 or higher and are interested in becoming staff with Engineering Science Quest. The program builds leadership skills through group problem solving, hands-on program development and delivery, first-hand experience working with children and the opportunity to complete volunteer service hours. Grade 11 Girls Conference: The conference is an exciting opportunity for grade 11 girls to participate in hands-on workshops, explore the University of Waterloo, meet engineering students, compete in a design competition, and experience life in residence!

CBC's First Page Student Writing Challenge!

The First Page student writing challenge is now open for submissions! 

THE CHALLENGE: Grades 7 to 12 students, give a glimpse of the great Canadian novel in the year 2169. Your challenge is to write the first page of a novel set 150 years in the future, with your protagonist facing an issue that's topical today and setting the scene for how it's all playing out in a century and a half.

WHAT YOU CAN WRITE: Your entry can be 300-400 words in length. Your entry also needs a title, but the title is not included in the word limit. Your entry can be written in any genre. 

The challenge will be accepting submissions until November 25, 2019 at 6 p.m.  

SafeTALK Training

safeTALK offers valuable skills to everyone 15 and older and requires no formal training or prior experience in suicide prevention.  safeTALK is an excellent tool for people who want to become alert to the dangers of suicide.  

This may be helpful for parents/loved ones of a young person experiencing suicidal ideation, older students who are looking to go into a 'helping' field, or anyone who wants to expand their comfort level and knowledge of suicide. 

These trainings often fill up very fast so I would urge anyone interested to sign up quickly.

DEEP Summer Academy and DEEP Spring Seminar Series

The Da Vinci Engineering Enrichment Program (DEEP) is designed for highly motivated high school students with an aptitude for science and math. DEEP provides students from around the world with the opportunity for advanced study in a variety of engineering, technology, business and science disciplines.

YMCA Peace Youth Forum

I am thrilled to invite yourself and your students to our annual Peace Forum for high school students following our Peace Breakfast, an event hosted by the YMCA of Oakville on Wednesday November 20^th from 10:30am-2pm.

The YMCA will be providing buses from each participating local high school to send students to learn more about Maggie Doyne and her story; how she turned her Passion to Action. Students will have the opportunity to engage with other youth in their community and participate in small workshops focusing on Health, Social Inclusion, Environment and Economic Empowerment in our venue at the Oakville Conference Centre.

I have attached a flyer to explain more about our Youth Forum and have also provided a brief timeline of the day below:

7:00 am – Annual Peace Breakfast; celebrating local peacemakers with keynote speaker, Maggie Doyne

9:30 am – Busses pick up from high schools

10:45 am – Peace Forum Keynote delivery, Maggie Doyne teaches participants about her story, her challenges and how to take Passion to Action

11:30 am – Pizza lunch provided

12:10 pm – Participants will break into smaller groups and workshops will be hosted focusing on Health, Social Inclusion, Environment and Economic Empowerment

2:00 pm – Buses depart Oakville Conference Centre
