How to prepare

High school students in the Hamilton-Halton and surrounding area from grades 9 through 12 are welcome to compete at the local brain bee.  Students demonstrate their knowledge about the brain and neuroscience, including fascinating topics involving intelligence, memory, emotions, sensations, movement, stress, aging, sleep, addiction, and more. Participating is a valuable experience that you can add to your resume — not to mention the possibility of winning prizes and fame!
All the questions will come from Neuroscience: Science of the Brain.

Prizes

There are prizes for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners.  The 1st place winner’s name will be engraved on the Hamilton Brain Bee perpetual traveling trophy plaque and this plaque will be displayed in the trophy case at their school for one year.  The 1st place winner will also represent Hamilton at the Annual CIHR Canadian National Brain Bee (end of May 2019). Graduate students from our department will help the winner prepare for the national event.  Additional exciting prizes are awarded at the national competition each year.  The 2019 CIHR Canadian Brain Bee champion will win a trip for two to represent Canada at the International Brain Bee competition.

Cornell Summer Programs

Cornell's Summer College is one of the nation's longest running and most highly regarded precollege academic programs. It brings more than 1,500 academically talented high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors from around the world to the Cornell campus in Ithaca, New York, each summer for three- and six-week programs.
Summer College students have the unparalleled opportunity to:
  • experience what it's like to live and learn at a great Ivy League university,
  • take real university courses,
  • work closely with Cornell's world-renowned faculty,
  • earn three to six college credits,
  • explore majors and career options,
  • get a jump on successful college applications,

This summer, we will offer programs between June 22 and August 6 in a wide variety of subjects, ranging from architecture, business, hospitality, and engineering to international relations, science, social change, and veterinary medicine—and many more. Enrichment Mini Course @ Queen's University



Students in grades nine through twelve, have the opportunity to learn beyond the high school classroom, with engaging and challenging courses that motivate them to explore and apply new knowledge. They return to school with renewed energy, an excitement for learning, and ideas for post-secondary and career planning.

High School Health Research Bursary Program





An invaluable opportunity for top high school science students in grades 11 and 12 to apply for a seven-week summer internship placement program working alongside Hamilton world-class researchers and team members July 2 – August 16, 2019.

This program provides students with an excellent opportunity to explore career options, expand their potential horizons and exposure to leading scientific minds in healthcare research, as well as receive a $1,500 bursary upon completion. 

Students are required to submit an application, joint letter of nomination from a science department head and science teacher, a 1000-word essay on their academic and extracurricular accomplishments, as well as career aspirations.  Posted on the HSHRB program web page are the submission guidelines, application form and bursary publications.
